Tom, I am not sure I understand the basis for your comment that color intensity would be degraded with a deeper depth of field. I am unaware of this phenomenon and have not recognized it in of my own photos but will experiment. With the focus point at the main stem and a narrower aperture the hairs would be sharper also. I am confused. Thanks, Richard Gold

As Gene said, more DOF would make this a different photo. That’s why in my workshops I'm always emphasizing the “why.” For our images to offer meaning we need to decide what we want the photograph to be “about” not just what it is “of”. I don't know what this flower is, but to me it’s about the striking blue and the “Hairy” stem. Just a little more DOF and Harvey could have lost the intensity of the blue and our ability to even see the “hair”. It wouldn’t have been wrong or bad, but different. I like this one.
